Phylogenetic relationships of the European trilophosaurids <i>Tricuspisaurus thomasi</i> and <i>Variodens inopinatus</i>

Trilophosauridae are an extinct group of archosauromorphs from the Upper Triassic western North America and Nova Scotia. Possible trilophosaurids Tricuspisaurus thomasi Variodens inopinatus have also been reported fissure fills in southwest United Kingdom, based on their multi-cuspid dentitions. Here, we provide updated description V. add to T. thomasi, including re-examining CT scans its holotype dentary. We confirm that apparent gap dentary is pathological, with dentine teeth either side asymmetrically thick, heavy vascularization anterior part confirms it likely had a keratinous rhamphotheca. Our cladistic analyses, which nine new characters, closely related taxa youngest known trilophosaurids. Further, support previous suggestion relatively small size these two European results insular dwarfism.
